John Acres

Policy Director

John has worked within the planning world for 47 years – both within the public, private, voluntary and academic sectors. He started his career in local government in London, later moving to the Midlands to serve for 10 years with the House Builders’ Federation. Since then, John has worked with housebuilder, Redrow Homes and subsequently Warwick based developer Catesby Property Group, culminating in 7 years within planning consultancy – the first 4 years with planning consultant Turley and then latterly running his own planning consultancy – Acres Land & Planning Ltd.

John has served as President of the Royal Town Planning Institute, representing 25,000 planners across Britain and around the world.  He is now Immediate Past President, still with a busy role within the Presidential Team. He was twice Chairman of the RTPI (West Midlands) Branch in 1999 and 2007 and edited ‘Tripwire’ magazine, (the Regional RTPI newsletter) for 16 years. He remains very active within the town planning profession.

John is closely involved with the Planning & Development Association, a gathering of private sector developers, housebuilders and planning consultants and was President from 2011-2013.

John holds an MSC in Urban and Regional Planning from London University and a Diploma in Town Planning. He was an external examiner for the MSC course at Birmingham City University for 5 years.
